Keeper Of The Dice

Over on Patreon, I’ve shared the first chapter of an unfinished novel. But, unlike most of what I share on that site, you don’t have to be a supporter to read it. I set the visibility to public to give non-supporters a taste of the kind of content I’m sharing, in the hope maybe they’ll sign up.

Have a read of it here. I think you’ll like it.

COMPETITION TIME

I’m giving away a signed paperback copy of my new short story collection, ENTROPIC ANGEL, which features twenty stories drawn from the past twelve years of my career, plus an introduction from the Nebula Award-winning author, Aliette de Bodard.

This competition is open to Patreon supporters and subscribers to my email newsletter, and means you could get your hands on a copy of the book a week or so before it’s officially launched by NewCon Press!

To enter, all you have to do is:

1). Support me on Patreon and/or subscribe to my email newsletter

2). Message me (via Patreon or email) with the answer to the following question:

The first short story I sold to Interzone appeared in the magazine in February 2006. But what was the title?

The closing date for entries is Friday 7th April. On that date, I will put all the correct answers in a hat and randomly select a winner.

Good luck!

Hint: If you don’t know the answer, you might be able to find a clue here.

Video: FantasyCon Reading

If you missed my reading at FantasyCon this weekend, you can watch the whole thing on the video below, courtesy of Neil Beynon, who filmed it on his phone. I am standing in front of a packed audience (it really was standing room only), reading a couple of chapters from my forthcoming novel, Embers Of War.

Macaque Attack Video

The electro punk band The Boy From Space have posted the video to Macaque Attack, their song inspired by my trilogy of Ack-Ack Macaque novels (and I contributed a few of the lyrics). Enjoy!

Announcement: EMBERS OF WAR

Last week, I exclusively shared the titles for my forthcoming trilogy with subscribers to my monthly email newsletter [If you haven’t already done so, you can sign up here: https://tinyletter.com/GLPowell]. Now, I’m announcing them to the world.

  • Book One: EMBERS OF WAR
  • Book Two: FLEET OF KNIVES (An Embers of War novel)
  • Book Three: LIGHT OF IMPOSSIBLE STARS (An Embers of War novel)

Titan Books will publish Embers Of War in February 2018.

From the official press release:

A thoughtful, character-driven space opera in the tradition of Josh Whedon’s cult classic television series Firefly meets the lyrical SF of Ann Leckie’s record breaking Ancillary Justice, the series follows the fate of the sentient warship Trouble Dog and her crew.

They built her for violence. They made her a war criminal. But now she’s fighting back.

She was a warship created for the hardships of battle, but instead finds herself disgusted by the casual violence of war and her own place in its instigation. In an attempt to atone for her guilt she makes the ultimate sacrifice: to be decommissioned.

Stripped of her crew and weaponry she finds herself isolated in her new role in the world. But when another ship goes missing in a disputed system she’s assigned a new mission and a new purpose. Teamed with a new crew of misfits and captained by Sal Konstanz, an ex-captain of a medical frigate who fought against her in her previous life, they are assigned to investigate and save whoever they can.

What appears to be a straight forward rescue mission soon turns out to be something more dangerous as it becomes clear that someone on board the missing ship is not who they first seemed. Finding herself and her crew at the heart of a potential new conflict that could engulf not just mankind but the entire galaxy, TROUBLE DOG is going to have to remember how to fight, and quickly…

Ack-Ack Macaque trilogy available on Audible.com

All three of the Ack-Ack Macaque books are now available in audio format from Audible.com, read by Richard Burnip. I’ve only heard snippets so far, but they sound pretty good. He seems to have read them pretty much the way I heard them in my head while writing them, which is good.

Go and download them all.

THREE-BOOK DEAL FOR A NEW SERIES FROM AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR GARETH L. POWELL

June 24th, London: Titan Books are delighted to announce the acquisition of a brand-new, original trilogy from award-winning author Gareth L. Powell for the UK, Northern American and Australian territories.

The author of the cult-favourite SF Ack-Ack Macaque books and previous space opera The Recollection, author Powell has garnered extensive critical praise alongside prestigious SF awards for his previous titles with The Guardian praising The Recollection as “beautifully balanced between big ideas and the smaller-scale human story,” adding “if you read only one space opera this year, it’s got to be [this]” and Adam Roberts, author of The Thing Itself, describing the Ack-Ack Macaque series as “genius.”

The three-book deal was struck between Alexander Cochran of Conville & Walsh Ltd and Titan Books Senior Editor Cath Trechman.  The as yet untitled series is due to begin publication in Summer 2017.
