Unexpected inspiration

Sometimes the power of the subconscious amazes me. Last night for instance, I dreamed I was writing the plot outline for a 100,000 word SF noir murder/mystery novel set on Earth in the near future. The dream was so vivid that when I woke up this morning and wrote down as much of it as I could remember, I ended up with a workable 2,000 word outline. It’s a little rough around the edges at the moment but it’s definitely got potential.

Do you have any examples, where you’ve made both an outline and the finished work available? Or can you recommend any examples “out there”?

Hi Lise. I’ve never made any of my outlines public, as they are usually very rough and written in a very ungrammatical note form, which only I probably understand. They tend to be a list of bullet points – this happens, then this happens – with some supplementary background notes.

I sometimes dream that I’ve had a brilliant idea for a story, but when I wake up I realise it was rubbish. Think hw much more writing I could get done while I was asleep though!
