Turning Ideas into Stories

coverforweb4 Morpheus Tales is a printed magazine of horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Its fourth issue will be published on 1st April and will contain, in addition to some short stories and articles, an interview with me.

The topics I discuss in the interview include:

  • Breaking into the short story market
  • Finding inspiration
  • Turning ideas into stories
  • Finding time to write

The interview came about after the magazine reviewed my short story collection back in November last year, calling it: “… one of the finest collections of SF short stories I have had the privilege of reading.”

Copies of Morpheus Tales IV can be ordered online via the magazine’s website: www.morpheustales.com

Friday Flash Fiction 48

This week’s story is a sequel to the full-length story Flotsam, which appeared in my short story collection and was recently featured in issue 3 of the Concept Sci-fi ezine.

JETSAM
By Gareth L Powell

Toby Milan thought he’d drowned. When Odette and Safak pulled him from the sea, his lungs were full of water and he was unconscious and bleeding from a knife wound to the thigh. They pulled him into Safak’s old twin engine Grumman sea plane and flew him to Barcelona, where he spent the next three days on a hotel bed in the Gothic Quarter, his leg wrapped in bandages.

Another review of The Last Reef

Writer Matt FW Curran gives my short story collection The Last Reef a great review on his blog Muskets and Monsters:

…there’s more imagination crammed into these pages than you’ll find in an average sci-fi novel from a mainstream publisher. And it’s not just his imagination either. Powell is a bloody good writer. His prose is lyrical and drips with vivid description, slipped into the text so it never feels like the rhythm of the writing is bogged down. It does mean that prose is economical but evokes more in one sentence of description than I’ve seen in a paragraph from more seasoned writers.

Some exciting news: an audio version of my collection The Last Reef will be available shortly, read by an actor called Philip Rose.

Morpheus Tales review

The following review appears on the MySpace blog of Morpheus Tales, the magazine of horror, science fiction and fantasy:

THE LAST REEF AND OTHER STORIES by Gareth L Powell

I liked this book, I really liked it. It’s not often that you come across a book by an author you have never heard of and you discover something amazing, but this is one of those rare books.

It sparkles. Continue reading “Morpheus Tales review”

New story online for free

The November issue of Concept Sci-Fi is now available to download as a free pdf file. The issue includes my short story Flotsam, set in Amsterdam and the Mediterranean. Flotsam originally appeared in my short story collection, The Last Reef, and is a sequel of sorts to the book’s title story.

While on the Concept Sci-Fi site, you can also check out the interview I did for them a couple of months ago: http://www.conceptscifi.com/igpowell.htm
