Silversands Book Launch Party

silversands_design smallerIn April, there will be a book launch for my first novel, and you are all invited.

The event takes place from 2.00pm on Saturday 24th April, in the back bar of The Shakespeare Tavern, Princes Street, Bristol.

I will be giving a short reading from Silversands and signing copies, so please come along and join the fun.

The Shakespeare Tavern is a traditional English pub in the Harbourside area of central Bristol. It serves a selection of beers, wines and spirits along with traditional pub meals and snacks. It is a 10 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station.

Silversands Press Release

Here’s the press release for my novel, Silversands:

MAESTEG, 10/01/2010 – Pendragon Press proudly announces the forthcoming release of Silversands, the hotly anticipated debut novel from rising British SF star Gareth L Powell.

Set 200 years in the future, Silversands tells the story of Avril Bradley, a reluctant astronaut thrown headlong into a world of political intrigue, espionage and subterfuge; a world where retired cops, digital ghosts and corporate assassins battle for possession of a hidden computer file that may just hold the key to humanity’s future.

Silversands Galley Proof

silversands_design smallerThe publisher has just sent through the full wrap-around cover art and a PDF file containing the typeset galley proof of my forthcoming novel, Silversands.

It looks good.

Vincent Chong has done a marvellous job with the cover picture and design, and the text looks good laid out and ready to print.

The novel will be launched in hardback in April, with the first 100 copies signed and numbered.

More information.

Plus, on a tangentially related note, the organisers of Odyssey 2010 have been in contact to ask if they can include my picture and bio on the “Also Attending” page of their website, along with the other authors, artists, editors, and critics scheduled to appear at the convention – so look out for that in the next few days.

Looking Forward to 2010

Happy New Year to you all.

2010 looks to be another busy year. First off, my debut novel Silversands will be launched by Pendragon in April, at the annual convention of the British Science Fiction Association. Hopefully the event will also see the launch of two anthologies, each containing a new short story of mine: The Shine anthology from Solaris, which features “The Church of Accelerated Redemption”, a story I co-wrote with Aliette de Bodard; and Conflicts, an anthology from NewCon press, featuring a short story I wrote called “Fallout”.

In addition to the above, I’m making good progress with my second novel, and writing further short stories, which I hope will one day comprise a second short story collection, following on from 2008’s The Last Reef and Other Stories.

New Date for Novel Release

silversands_design-smallI’ve just received confirmation from Christopher Teague at Pendragon Press that following a twelve month delay, my novel Silversands will be published in April next year.

The book will be available in a hard cover designed by award-winning artist Vincent Chong (see picture).

On his website, Christopher writes:

“Gareth is rapidly becoming a name to watch, and I forsee good things being said about this novel… which means when it eventually comes available to pre-order you’d better be quick to snap it up.”

Keep an eye on www.pendragonpress.net for more information over the next few months.

Bad news from Pendragon Press

I just received the following email from Christopher Teague of Pendragon Press, confirming that my novel Silversands will now not be published in April next year, as previously planned.

2009 will see no planned publications from Pendragon Press… This decision hasn’t been easy, and is far from being a reflection on the current state of publishing, but more a reflection on my own level of energy and enthusiasm

Needless to say, I’m extremely disappointed by this turn of events, as I know a lot of people were looking forward to reading the book. I’m currently investigating alternate arrangements and will post updates as soon as I have any definite news.

New Interview Online at Concept Sci-fi

Gary Reynolds of Concept Sci-fi interviewed me recently regarding my forthcoming novel, Silversands. We discussed the process of novel writing, the lessons I learned from writing mine, and the possibility that books will become shorter in the future to better compete with other forms of entertainment.

The full interview is now online here.
