"The Last Reef" To Be Broadcast On WRFR

On Saturday December 1st, Paul Cole will play a reading of my short story “The Last Reef” on his show on WRFR Radio in the States.

WRFR broadcasts live from studios in Knox County, serving the Rockland Maine area. The show will be live streamed during the radio broadcast, and will be available online afterwards as a podcast.

Because of its length, the story may be broadcast in two parts.

WRFR Radio 93.3 FM

Paul Cole will read and discuss The Last Reef on his show on WRFR Radio in the States.

The show will be live streamed during the radio broadcast, and then available afterwards as a podcast.

Of Petaflops and Prime Ministers

A lot can happen in the world in a day…

And at the same time – on a more personal level – there’s a lot going on:

  • I’ve been discussing cover art for my forthcoming novel with Christopher Teague of Pendragon Press, and cover art for my forthcoming short story collection with Andrew Hook of Elastic Press.
  • The software company I work for have given me a company car – a Volvo V50.
  • And tonight, I managed to swim thirty lengths of the local pool in thirty minutes – a total of 750 metres in 1,800 seconds – proving to myself that I’m not as unfit as I feared.

Marketing Advice for SF Writers

Here are links to four excellent articles Jason Stoddard has written for writers wanting to promote themselves online:

North Somerset Times

There is a short piece about me in today’s edition of the North Somerset Times.

A NEW CHAPTER

An author is celebrating the forthcoming publication of a collection of speculative fiction stories.

Gareth Powell will see his series of books, entitled Distant Galaxies Colliding, published by Elastic Press in August next year.

His debut novel Silversands will also be published a few months later.

Dad-of two-Gareth, who works as a marketing manager, said: “Some people want to climb Everest, swim with sharks or bungee off a flyover in Australia. For me, having these two books accepted by such respected publishers is an ambition fulfilled.”

Press Article

The following article appears in today’s edition of the Bristol Evening Post (along with a photograph, that I’m not allowed to post for reasons of copyright):

North Somerset writer Gareth Powell is celebrating after signing two book deals this month.

Although the 36-year-old sci-fi specialist has lived all his life in Bristol, his work has been published as far afield as the United States, Europe and the Middle East and it has been translated into several languages, including Polish, Greek, Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese. Critics have described his stories as “dark”, “gritty”, “profound” and “unforgettable”.

Gareth, an assistant marketing manager for a software company, will have his first short story collection, called The Last Reef, published by independent publisher Elastic Press in August next year.

At the same time, he has also revealed that his debut novel, Silversands, will be published by Pendragon Press, based in Wales, a few months later.

Gareth, who is married with two children, said: “Some people want to climb Everest, swim with sharks, or bungee off a flyover in Australia.”For me, having these two books accepted by publishers is an ambition fulfilled.”

Andrew Hook, of Elastic Press, said the characters in Gareth’s short stories “made connections with today’s world, whilst also nodding to the future”.

Christopher Teague, of Pendragon Press, said the novel was “a damn thrilling tale of planetary politics, espionage and subterfuge”

Bristol Evening Post

I had my picture taken last night by an Evening Post photographer. It will accompany a short “local author signs double book deal” piece about me in tomorrow’s edition of the paper.

I then met up with three other SF&F writers from the local area: Colin Harvey, Mark Leyland, and Jo Hall. We had a relaxed evening in the White Hart, talking about the ups and downs of SF&F writing, and aim to get together again in June.

I now have my own MySpace page. Find me at: http://www.myspace.com/garethlynpowell

Marketing Advice for Writers

Jason Stoddard has some excellent advice on his site for SF writers wanting to create an online presence.

Aphelion Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

This year, Aphelion celebrates its tenth anniversary with a series of special issues showcasing the best stories published in the webzine over the last ten years. Ten years is a fantastic achievement. As Gareth D Jones says in his article on SF UK Review: “Not many SF magazines make it to their tenth anniversary, and it’s certainly a rarity to find a magazine that has been on the web for a whole decade.”

Three of my early stories were published in Aphelion:
