Reading List

I have a lot of books I need to catch up with, so one of my New Year’s resolutions will be to work my way through the following list:

  • JG Ballard – The Complete Short Stories
  • Bruce Sterling – Ascendancies
  • Cordwainer Smith – The Rediscovery Of Man
  • Harlan Ellison – The Essential Ellison
  • Arthur C Clarke – The Collected Stories
  • Philip K Dick – Human Is?
  • Vernor Vinge – The Collected Stories

Which books are you planning to read next year?

This is a fine list that you have here. I’m always happy when I see that someone is reading Cordwainer Smith. I encountered a couple of his stories in anthologies when I was very young and was so taken with how strange they are that it probably had a lot to do with my lifelong interest in the genre. The Essential Ellison book is excellent, though it’s old enough now that there are a few Ellison items that I might consider “essential” that are missing from it just because they were written later. As for the Ballard collection, I don’t remember what exactly is in that and do not have my own copy, but it’s going to be well worth it regardless which specific items are there.

I plan to read Silversands at some point and Quarantine by Egan.

Is that the whopping new 1200 page Ballard? The size of it scared me off as I’ve not really read any of his. Cordwainer Smith is fabulous. It must be 15 or 20 years since I read The Rediscovery of Man. I’m determined to get hold of all the James White Sector General books that don’t seem to have been published over here.

Gareth – It’s the 2 volume “Complete” stories in paperback. I bought them a while back because several people have commented that I have a similar style and tone to some of his work, so I thought I’d better check him out, to see what they meant.
