Thanks chaps.

As Ben says, I chose that setting because it has implications and sets up certain expectations... which I decided to leave unspoken. It's there but it's not. All the weirdness these characters have seen has happened off-stage. Whatever scarred the kid (Eric) is left to the reader's imagination. Because at the end of the day, it's not a story about alien abduction, it's a story about the way *life* drags people away from each other

Excellent! The setting and title wrongfooted me from the off, which is no bad thing, and the voice is great - so American. I love the second sentence: "We were both in uniform, and it was one of those clear desert nights where the moon's a pickled egg and the air's sharp enough to cut you."

Understated and tragic. The setting's implications hang there but don't overwhelm; the kid's set of possessions lays out a decent little story on their own. It works both on its own and as the opening of something longer, which is a nice little feather in its cap; flexible.

Tiny and perfect. Usually I am analytical and verbose, but today, that's all I can say about this. Made my afternoon, that's for sure.
