DRIVING TO THE MOON
By Gareth L Powell

I’m in the car with Edith, in front of our old house. It’s an autumn afternoon, and everything’s crisp at the edges. Edith’s standing on the driver’s seat, gripping the wheel. She’s fifteen months old, and she’s looking up, through the windscreen at the pale moon hanging over the house.

‘Moon! Moon!’ she shouts, twisting the wheel.

I’m in the passenger seat, holding her belt to stop her falling. ‘That’s right,’ I say, ‘we’re driving to the moon.’
